Rob has been modeling railroads since he was 8 years old with the Christmas present of an American Flyer train set. From that point he was hooked!!
That was a long time ago and since he has built a least a dozen layouts for himself and more for others. When he was a teenager he won Best of Show in a regional NMRA convention contest with a scratch built diorama and, few years later, First Place in dioramas at a NMRA national convention. His work was also pictured in Model Trains magazine. The next several years took him away from the hobby for college and graduate school. In 1972 he constructed a layout in their first house in San Francisco. As a international management consultant his modeling was curtailed for years by extensive travel and busy work schedule along with a growing family. In 1975 he founded and ran The Hobby Company of San Francisco which grew into the largest chain of hobby stores in Northern California at that time selling model railroading along with many other model building hobbies. He and his employees built a number of layouts for customers and display.
After selling the business ten years later, he moved to Oregon and continued to be active in the hobby in n, HO, O, and G gauges. He is now retired but custom builds models for others.
Rob is proficient in all aspects of model railroading but favors structure and scenic construction. He builds from craftsman kits and scratch. Some of his recent work is pictured here. The layout photos are of a 12' x 16' n gauge layout currently under construction in his home in Portland, Oregon. The bridge took a year to construct.
